Individual Development Plan (IDP)

Individual Development Plans (IDPs) are intended as a tool for both faculty and students to support a student’s goals or development. IDPs can be initiated by faculty or students at any point during the year, but will only be formally initiated, if needed, by faculty after the Academic Progress Report (APR) each spring.

Once the desire or need for an IDP is identified, the student's advisor will work with the student to complete the IDP form. The form will clearly outline the area(s) the student will (or would like to) work on, the steps they need to take to achieve those goals, a clear timeline during which these steps will occur, and the pertinent resources available to the student. The advisor will then regularly check-in with the student about their progress and provide additional support as needed.

During the graduate faculty meeting in late fall, and again during the APR review in spring, faculty will review students’ progress on any faculty-initiated IDPs, within the framework of their overall performance in the program.
