GNSD Fellowships & Grants

GNSD administers several fellowships and stipends each year on a competitive basis to students in GNSD. Application procedures and deadlines are announced via the Department listserv, usually in the spring. Students are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Summer Stipends: Intended to provide financial support to currently enrolled GNSD graduate students in order to further their progress towards the degree. Summer stipends cannot be used to fulfill Incompletes. The amount and number of awards depend on available funds.
  • Conference/Dissertation Travel Grants: In addition to the yearly travel funds, travel grants are sometimes available for students who will be attending more than one conference during the year or who are no longer eligible for the annual travel funds. The competitions for these travel grants are at the same time as the Dissertation Grants.
  • Dissertation Grants: These funds provide support for various research needs at any stage of dissertation work.
  • Gerhard Weiss Fellowship in German Studies: Awarded to a full-time graduate student who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication to undergraduate teaching and to scholarly inquiry in German Studies.
  • Nils and Patricia Hasselmo Fellowship in Scandinavian Studies: Supports research and coursework of graduate students in the humanities, social sciences, and arts, whose scholarly interests fall within the field of Scandinavian studies. Hella Lindemeyer Mears Fellowships in German Studies: Full fellowship support for one academic year to Ph.D. candidates whose scholarly work focuses on enduring texts or issues in German language, literature, theater, or philosophy. Holders of the fellowship should exhibit outstanding promise as scholars and teachers of German literature and/or language. Graduate School Fellowships

The Graduate School awards several fellowships each year to students from all areas of the University. Deadlines for these fellowships are generally in early February. The Grad School Fellowship Office's website is a good resources, as it includes information on both internal and external fellowships. (The Stout Wallace and Shevlin fellowships are under the "Privately Funded Fellowships" link.)

Fellowships typically awarded to students who have not yet completed the prelims include:

  • Stout Wallace Fellowship: For graduate students in the humanities or social sciences who are in the intermediate years of the Ph.D. (i.e., students currently in their second or third year of graduate study). Preference will be given to those who will not have taken their oral prelims before the start of the fellowship. Relevant graduate programs that offer the Ph.D. may nominate two students. The Fellowship includes tuition remission.
  • Thomas Shevlin Fellowship: For graduate students in the biological and agricultural sciences, basic physical and medical sciences, and liberal arts. Relevant programs may nominate one student. • Harold Leonard Memorial Fellowship in Film Study — Open to graduate students proposing a year of well-defined research or study in film history, criticism, theory, or aesthetics. Up to five awards. Stipend is for the academic year and includes tuition remission.
  • Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships — These fellowships give outstanding final-year Ph.D. candidates who are making timely progress toward the degree—typically those entering their fifth year of graduate study—an opportunity to complete the dissertation within the upcoming academic year by devoting full-time effort to the research and writing of the dissertation. Candidates must be nominated by their department. Fellowship recipients receive an academic-year stipend, plus full tuition for thesis credits.
  • Torske Klubben Fellowship — For graduate students who have an interest in or connection to Norway or its culture; preference is given to advanced graduate students. The stipend is for the academic year.

Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS)

The Institute for Global Studies awards Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships to graduate students (usually at the Ph.D. level) who need to learn certain languages. Both summer and academic-year fellowships are available; the latter are equivalent to a 50% TAship. Funds can be used for courses in the U.S. or abroad.
