5xxx Course Guidelines

Course Expectations for Undergraduates Enrolled in 5xxx-Level Courses in GNSD

Students with a GSD major may complete a 5xxx course (excluding GER 5011) in place of the major project seminar to fulfill the capstone/major project requirement. 5xxx courses are primarily for graduate students, but juniors and seniors may enroll. University policy stipulates that 5xxx courses must have separate requirements for graduate students and for undergraduate students. The department offers stand-alone 5xxx courses and also 5xxx courses cross-listed with 3xxx courses.

The department recommends the following course expectations for undergraduates enrolled in 5xxx courses:

  • Course expectations for undergraduates in a 5xxx course should be lower than the typical expectations for graduate students in the course, but higher than the typical expectations for undergraduates in 3xxx courses.
  • For 3xxx/5xxx cross-listed courses, there would be 3 levels of expectations: one for undergraduates in 3xxx, a higher one for undergraduates in 5xxx, and a highest one for graduate students in 5xxx.
  • Examples of 5xxx expectations for undergraduates might include one or more of the following:
    • longer written assignments (e.g., a paper of 15 pages in English) than might normally be required in 3xxx courses
    • an assignment with a research component
    • a longer paper (e.g., 7-8 pages) written in the GSD language of emphasis
    • the use of secondary sources in the GSD language of emphasis
