Coursework
Consult the following for details on minimum credit and grade requirements, transfer credits (Continuing Education classes taken before entering the graduate program are considered transfer courses), and other regulations. Also note that a course cannot fulfill more than one requirement. M.A. Course Requirements (Fall 2013 and later)One of the primary aims of the M.A. program is to enable students to acquire a breadth of knowledge as well as to identify potential areas for further research.
Ph.D. Course Requirements (Fall 2013 and later)The coursework for the Ph.D. program should begin to focus your area of research, moving towards specialization while also providing contextualization for your work. You should choose your courses for the Ph.D. program both within and outside the Department with your scholarly interests in mind. Coursework should be completed before the prelims (or have at most one course left (no more than 4 credits). Your coursework should help you to prepare for the prelims, but additional reading to develop a more focused research area is also necessary. Some required courses (e.g., GSD 8801, Dissertation Seminar) are only offered every other year, so plan ahead.
