Preparing for the Job Market

The Department of German, Nordic, Slavic, and Dutch assists its students in finding employment as they near completion of the dissertation. The best person to seek guidance from is your advisor, but the Department receives information on available jobs which are posted to the GNSD Intranet in the Communications section.

On a regular basis, the Department sponsors a variety of workshops to help with the job search. These workshops provide guidance in writing curricula vitae and résumés; putting together teaching portfolios; and preparing for interviews. Contact the Director of Graduate Studies for further information about when these workshops will take place.

It is important to realize the crucial role that your advisor must play in your preparation for the job market. You should inform your advisor by early September of your intention to apply for academic employment, and you should start immediately to compose your cover letter and to assemble the various pieces of your placement dossier. Students should expect detailed and timely feedback from their advisors on every aspect of their placement materials; they should also be prepared to maintain frequent contact with their advisor and to revise their documents many times in accordance with the advice they receive. Department resources are available in the form of workshops and direct advising, but it is primarily your responsibility to make use of them.

In addition to departmental workshops, there are others sponsored by the university. For further information on these resources, contact:
